Royal Garden Hotel, London

Graham Bamford

Name: Graham Bamford
Position: General Manager
Years in Service: 13

Why did you decide to do this job?
The sheer variety and excitement of hotel management means that every day is different and presents a new set of new challenges. I love guest contact, especially when you get to make a real impact on somebody's visit to London.

Tell us about anyone who has inspired you?
Evangelo Brioni (who's real name was Brian Evans), Banqueting Manager of The Savoy in the Seventies, was a wonderful leader and instrumental in teaching me how to temper drive with humour and humility.

What job did you do before this?
I've been in this business for over 30 years.  I joined The Savoy as a Management Trainee and my first management position came at the Hyatt Carlton Tower in London in 1982.  I have worked abroad, in Singapore and in Indonesia. However, I couldn't resist the lure of the greatest city in the world and returned to London in 1993.

What is the best thing about your day?
When guests express their satisfaction, it makes it all worthwhile.  Plus the privilege of enjoying the incredible view from our rooftop  as the sun rises.

What ambitions do you have for the hotel?
We aim to provide the very best five star facilities with the type of unstuffy friendliness that one associates with small hotels and guesthouses. The Royal Garden's AA Red Star Award reassures visitors that even though we are a big London hotel, we constantly strive to meet and exceed expectations. Our staff enjoy working here tremendously, and we want that element of fun to permeate through to all our guests and diners. As former Chairman of the Master Innholders, I am also committed to the attainment of the highest standards across the entire British hotel industry.
